Tomiko Robson

Tomiko Robson first took a ballet class at the age of six and has been dancing ever since.  She completed her Royal Academy of Dance examinations in ballet and then fell in love with contemporary dance in university.  While earning her degree in Arts and Sciences at McMaster University, she danced with the McMaster Dancers, a contemporary dance company under the direction of David Wilson.  There, she was exposed to a wide range of contemporary styles through working with a variety of Toronto-based independent dance artists.    She also performed professionally with the Parahumans Dance Company in Toronto and on its 2002 tour in the United Kingdom.

After earning her Bachelor of Education degree at the University of British Columbia, Tomiko moved to the small community of Wekweeti, in the Tlicho region of the Northwest Territories to teach grades 4-9.  After falling in love with the North and its people, Tomiko and her husband chose to move south to Yellowknife to begin their family.  In Yellowknife, she was delighted to find the Crazy Legs Contemporary Dance Company (CLC) and a vibrant community of dancers.  Since then, she has been an active presence in the Yellowknife dance community, performing with CLC and co-founding the Yellowknife Dance Collective (YDC) in 2011.  She has directed, choreographed, and performed in numerous YDC productions and collaborations and has been teaching ballet at Bella Dance Academy for the past 19 years.  

Recent dance credits include direction, choreography, and performance in YDC’s productions SHORTS! (2026) and North of 60X60 (2024), collaboration (choreography and performance) with Fia Grogono in the short dance film “Attention” (2025), and working with Carmen and Echo Chamber to create new choreography for "I Can Finally Feel the Sun” as part of Echo Chamber's Western Canada tour of Portraits of Home (2023).
