2011/2012 Classes--Dance & Music Classes --Yellowknife

Most of our dance programs run from September until the end of May and finish with a performance in our annual recital during the first weekend in June. We also offer workshop classes in 6 - 15 week sessions, including Salsa Babies, Kindermusik and Ballroom Dancing. 

Please note that the class name in (brackets) is our class name and not intended to correspond with students’ school grade.

Annual Classes

Parent and Tots (Ages 2)
This interactive creative movement class is designed to allow parents to assist the very youngest movers through their first dance class experience! This dance class focuses on developing hand and eye coordination, balance, rhythm, musicality and flexibility. A parent and child interaction allows children to feel comfortable in a structured classroom atmosphere and prepares them for the mini movement classes in the future.

Age 2 with Parent Participation:
Monday 10:15 am – 10:45 am
Saturday 9:30 am – 10:00 am
Saturday 11:00 am – 11:30 am
Mini Movement (Ages 3 - 6)
Focuses on heightening the child's abilities in creativity and expressions, and developing a sense of self. Classes will emphasize fun while introducing pre-primary technique to enhance balance, rhythm and musicality in a relaxed environment.

3 year olds:
Monday 9:30 am – 10:00 am
Friday 4:15 pm – 4:45 pm

Saturday 11:45 am – 12:15 pm

4 year olds:

Ballet (Ages 5+)
Focuses on developing balance, correct muscle use and alignment, flexibility, expression and musicality. Students will learn classical ballet terminology through barre work, adage and allegro.

5 year olds (Preliminary Ballet):

Saturday 12:30 pm – 1:00 pm

6 year olds (Primary Ballet):
Wednesday 5:45 pm- 6:15 pm

7 years (Grade 1):

9 years/10 years (Grade 3):

10-12 years with Ballet experience (Junior):

14 – 17 years with Ballet experience (Advanced Ballet):

Pointe

For dancers with at least 2 years of ballet training and by teacher recommendation only.

Tap (Ages 6+)
A fast-moving class that focuses on developing rhythm, coordination and musicality.

6/7 year olds (Primary Tap):

7/8 years (Grade 1/2):
Monday 6:00 pm – 6:45 pm

9/10 years (Grade 3/4):
Monday 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

11 – 17 years with Tap experience (Grade 5/6):
Thursday 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

11 – 17 years without Tap experience (Beginner Tap):
Monday 8:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Combo Classes (Ages 4/5/6)
A combination of Mini Movement, Ballet and Tap in one class.

4 year olds:
Monday 11:00 am - 11:45 am
Saturday 11:00 am – 11:45 am

5 year olds:
Saturday 12:00 pm – 12:45 pm

6 year olds:
Saturday 1:00 pm – 1:45 pm
Modern (Ages 7+)
Classes will incorporate elements of Limon and Graham techniques. Graham technique focuses on contraction and release and Limon on fall, recovery and suspension. Dancers will learn choreographic and improvisational techniques, proper posture, will increase their fitness level, as well as increase coordination, flexibility and strength.

7/8 years (Grade 1/2):

9/10 years (Grade 3/4):

11-13 years (Modern III):
Wednesday 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

14-17 years (Modern IV):

Jazz (Ages 7+)
A high-energy class that focuses on developing flexibility, strength, and technique. Classes will include a warm-up, set exercises and various choreographed progressions. Various styles of jazz, including hip hop and lyrical will be introduced in some classes.

7 years (Grade 1):

8 years (Grade 2):

9 years (Grade 3):

10 years (Grade 4):

Hip Hop (Ages 5+)

Features warm up and routines, focusing on the latest funky moves. A great way to stay in shape.

Musical Theatre (Ages 8-10)
Created for the excitement of performing. A combination of singing, dancing and acting for the young performer.

7/8 years (Musical Theatre I):

9/10 years (Musical Theatre II):
Tuesday 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Actor’s Studio (Ages 11-17)
Includes everything the young actor needs to gain a stronger understanding of improv, theatre, scene study and analysis as well as a splash of song.

11-13 years (Actor’s Studio III):
Friday 5:00 pm – 6:15 pm

14-17 years (Actor’s Studio IV):
Friday 6:15 pm – 7:30 pm
